Shelter Puppies

Photography and text by Michael Kloth

I made these portraits while volunteering with animal shelters, photographing puppies as they explored, played, and waited for homes. The book brings together their photographs and stories.

Shelter Puppies book cover, photography by Michael Kloth
“All puppies are cute, but these photos, I think, really go beyond cute. They go to something incredibly soulful.”
— Tracie Hotchner, host of Dog Talk (and Kitties Too!) Shelter Puppies interview, 2011

Getting to know the puppies

Shelter Puppies includes more than 60 portraits of puppies awaiting adoption, from small breeds to larger dogs and the many mixes in between. Their photographs and stories grew out of my volunteer work with animal shelters.

I followed Shelter Cats with this book in 2011. Both projects came from photographing animals in shelters and sharing something about the individuals waiting there. I continue that work in Tucson alongside my commissioned pet portraits.
