Saguaro Series Prints | Michael Kloth, MFA

The saguaro cactus exists nowhere else on earth except the Sonoran Desert—a singular icon of the American Southwest found only in southern Arizona and small parts of northern Mexico. This collection captures the architectural presence and surprising subtlety of these ancient sentinels, from dramatic sunset silhouettes to intimate studies of form and texture.

I've photographed throughout Saguaro National Park, Sabino Canyon, and the Catalina Foothills for over 15 years, returning to the same locations across seasons to document how light transforms these familiar forms. Some images emphasize the saguaro's monumental scale against desert skies. Others reveal details most visitors never notice—the geometric patterns of pleated ribs, the vulnerability of new growth, the way late afternoon light catches blooms at the crown.

These aren't postcard views. Each photograph explores the saguaro as subject worthy of serious attention—both as regional icon and as study in form, light, and the particular beauty of slow growth in harsh environments.

About the Artist

Michael Kloth holds an MFA from Academy of Art University and maintains the Certified Professional Photographer designation through Professional Photographers of America. His work appears in the TMC Foundation's permanent Healing Arts collection in Tucson, Arizona, where he has operated his photography practice since 2011.

The Saguaro Series represents over 15 years of sustained attention to the Sonoran Desert's most iconic subject, combining fine art training with intimate knowledge of Southern Arizona's landscapes and seasonal light.

About These Prints

Every Plasticine Prehistoric print is made by me, in my studio, on a professional Epson 9900 large format printer using UltraChrome HDR pigment inks. This is the same class of equipment used by fine art print studios and museum reproduction departments. I make every decision about color, density, and output - the print is a continuation of the creative work, not a production step handed off to someone else.

Prints are produced on Hahnemühle Photo Rag, a 308gsm 100% cotton rag paper that appears in museum and gallery collections worldwide. Each print is made to order, hand-inspected, and signed before it ships.

Archival pigment inks and fine art paper ensure color stability and longevity exceeding 100 years under proper display conditions - which feels like a reasonable standard for creatures that already survived one extinction event.

Why Collectors Choose the Saguaro Series

These images appeal to anyone with connections to Southern Arizona—former residents, winter visitors, or locals seeking artwork that reflects the landscape they see daily but rendered with the care and attention it deserves. The saguaro carries instant recognition without requiring explanation, making these pieces accessible conversation starters that work in both residential and corporate settings.

Unlike generic desert photography, this collection comes from someone who's lived in Tucson since 2011, photographing the same locations across years and seasons. That sustained attention produces work that moves beyond tourism toward genuine artistic investigation of place.

Interior designers choose these prints for hospitality spaces, medical facilities, and corporate offices seeking authentic Southwestern presence. Private collectors often begin with a single print and return for additional images as their appreciation for the work deepens.
