Cat Photography in Tucson
I photograph cats the way they deserve—with patience, respect for their rhythms, and attention to the details that make each feline unique. Whether your cat is social and curious or prefers observing from a distance, I adapt my approach to capture genuine expressions rather than forcing cooperation.
The Art of Photographing Cats
Cat photography requires a different mindset than working with dogs or people. Felines operate on their own timeline, communicate through subtle body language, and decide when they're ready to participate. My background photographing rescue cats at Pima Animal Care Center and the Humane Society of Southern Arizona taught me to read these signals and work within each cat's comfort zone rather than against it.
I bring professional studio lighting to your home, creating museum-quality portraits in the environment where your cat feels most confident. This approach eliminates the stress of transporting your cat while giving us access to their favorite spots—whether that's a sunny windowsill, a cherished perch, or simply a quiet corner where they feel secure.
Capturing Feline Personality
The best cat portraits happen in moments of genuine behavior rather than staged poses. Some cats are theatrical performers who'll investigate every piece of equipment. Others prefer subtle observation, revealing their character through focused gazes and carefully considered movements. Both approaches create compelling portraits when I'm patient enough to let each cat show me who they are.
My fine art training from Academy of Art University informs how I see light, composition, and the small details that define your cat's presence—the texture of their coat, the intensity of their eyes, the way they hold themselves. These elements combine to create portraits that feel true to your cat's personality rather than generic feline photography.
Studio & Natural Light Sessions
Studio Sessions: Professional lighting equipment creates dramatic portraits with controlled backgrounds, perfect for highlighting your cat's features and capturing fine detail in their coat. Studio lighting works beautifully whether we're photographing in your home or on location.
Natural Light Sessions: For cats who prefer less equipment presence, natural light photography creates softer, environmental portraits that show your cat in their territory. These sessions often capture more relaxed behavior since there's less technical setup to investigate.
Both approaches produce archival-quality prints suitable for display. I'll discuss your cat's temperament during our consultation to recommend the approach most likely to create portraits you'll treasure.
Multi-Cat Households
Photographing multiple cats together presents unique challenges. Some cats prefer individual attention, while others thrive in pairs or groups. I take time to observe how your cats interact, then create opportunities for both individual portraits and relationship-based photos if your cats are comfortable together.
Sessions accommodate different energy levels within the same household—we might photograph an outgoing cat first while a more reserved cat observes from safety, then shift focus once they're comfortable with the process.
What Makes These Sessions Different
My approach combines technical expertise developed over twenty years as a professional photographer with genuine understanding of feline behavior learned through hundreds of shelter photography sessions. I'm not trying to force cats into dog-like cooperation or make them perform for the camera. Instead, I'm documenting who they already are.
As a Certified Professional Photographer and member of the Professional Photographers of America, I understand how to create flattering light in any environment—from your living room to your backyard. This technical foundation means we're not limited by location or available light.
Sessions typically last 90 minutes to 2 hours, giving your cat time to adjust to equipment and decide when they're ready to participate. This patient timeline produces better portraits than rushing through poses.

Published Work & Expertise
My work photographing cats extends beyond client sessions. I've published three books on shelter animals—Shelter Cats (2010), FindelKatzen (German edition, 2011), and Shelter Puppies (2011)—documenting the personalities and stories of animals awaiting adoption. These projects required photographing hundreds of cats in shelter environments, teaching me to work with felines across every temperament spectrum, from confident and social to fearful and defensive.
Understanding how to photograph cats who haven't been socialized, who are stressed by shelter environments, or who've experienced trauma translates directly to better sessions with your cats. If I can create compelling portraits of shelter cats under difficult conditions, I can absolutely capture your cat's personality in the comfort of their own home.
This body of work formed the foundation of my MFA thesis at Academy of Art University and continues to inform my volunteer photography with Pima Animal Care Center and the Humane Society of Southern Arizona, where I've been photographing adoptable animals weekly since 2011.
Investment & Process
Cat photography sessions typically require my Standard Session ($550) or Extended Session ($950) rather than mini sessions. Cats work on their own timeline and need time to acclimate to equipment and decide when they're ready to participate—usually 90 minutes to 2 hours.
Standard Session ($550) includes 90 minutes of session time with 1-2 cats, $150 print credit toward your gallery selections, pre-session consultation, professional editing, and your private online gallery.
Extended Session ($950) provides 2 hours for multi-cat households (up to 3 cats), $300 print credit, and time for multiple setups, locations, and creative approaches.
Multi-Cat Households: Photographing multiple cats together requires additional time for individual portraits, pair combinations, and managing different energy levels. The Extended Session accommodates this complexity without rushing.
Sessions include our consultation, the photography session at your location throughout the greater Tucson area, professional editing, and your private online gallery for selecting images. Archival prints, canvas, and digital collections are available separately, allowing you to choose exactly what you want from your session.
